The coffee book tag — the wordy habitat

The Coffee Book Tag

It’s been a long time since I did any tag, and I’ve been itching for one haha.

I found this tag over at This Splendid Shambles and it looked really nice. Bring on the coffee vibes!

a steaming cup gif

1. Black: Name a series that’s tough to get into but has hardcore fans

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

It’s tough to get into because there are SO MANY BOOKS in the Shadowhunter world now. Not to mention, the original series is quite cringey to read if the reader has grown older. I liked it when I was 15, but really disliked it when I tried to reread at 19.

But whoever did read it and loved it, continued to love the rest of the books. All the Shadowhunter books have hardcore fans who have read every single book (including the novellas) and have as many Shadowhunter merch as they can get.

2. Peppermint mocha: Name a book that gets more popular during the winter or a festive time of year

Harry Potter books by JK Rowling.

Okay I never understood why but TONS of Harry Potter readalongs occur during the Winter, especially in December. I’m not a huge HP fan so I’m extra skeptical. Suddenly several people start rereading the books in December for no reason. It doesn’t make sense lol.

3. Hot chocolate: What is your favourite children’s book?

I quite like Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. It’s the one children’s book I can reread even now.

It’s actually a Middle Grade book, but yeah. While the movie starring Anne Hathaway is good, it doesn’t do much justice to the book. The book has a much bigger and more interesting plot with better twists and character development.

4. Double shot of espresso: Name a book that kept you on the edge of your seat from start to finish

Heads You Win by Jeffrey Archer.

My overall rating of the book isn’t that great because the ending ruined things, but the suspense of the book is amazing. I was gripped from start to finish and my mum laughed at me for being so out of the real world. All of Jeffrey Archer’s books are like that but this was the one I read last. My review talks more about the book in detail.

5. Starbucks: Name a book you see everywhere

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen

This is, by far, the most popular classic and the most recommended one. It also has the most pretty versions because, daamn. Some of the versions look SO GOOD. I want them all.

P. S. I was going to say Harry Potter for this as well because those books haunt me everywhere, but decided to not give the same answer for two questions.

6. That hipster coffee shop: Give a book by an indie author a shutout

Penny Reid!

I absolutely LOVE Penny Reid’s books. Her book Neanderthal Seeks Human got me more excited to read the romance genre and explore it. It’s one of the few books I had read back then which had a great plot and had characters.

7. Oops! I accidentally got decaf: Name a book you were expecting more from

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi.

The hype really did me dirty for this one. Everyone was RAVING about it, that I even got a paperback instead of an ebook. I trusted the hype, and was highly disappointed. I hated it so much that I started annotating m frustration around 50 pages in. Mine is an unpopular opinion, and I don’t understand why most people love it.

8. The perfect blend: Name a book or series that was both bitter and sweet but ultimately satisfying

The Selection series by Kiera Cass

I absolutely loved the first book, and liked books 2 and 3 enough. Book 4 was bad but book 5 saved the series just barely. It’s a roller coaster, but I like the series in the end. It’s my go-to when I want to reread a series.

My Favourite 2019 Blogging Moments Tag

Hey everyone!

It’s been a long year with ups and downs in blogging for me. I wanted to somehow round it up and found the perfect tag by Laura @ the book corps. It’s her original tag and she’s made a great one.

  1. All the answers must be about your blog posts.
  2. Please link the original creator of the tag!
  3. You don’t have to provide just one post for each question, you can provide as many as you want so long as they were written in 2019.
  4. If you haven’t written a post that matches one of the questions, choose one that relates to it as close as possible.
  5. Tag 5+ bloggers to they can share their accomplishments too! And make sure you read the posts they share!

the friend zone book cover

The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez

My favourite book reviews are directly proportional to how much I like the books lol. If I like a book more, I put more effort into the review. I quite liked The Friend Zone, and I really liked writing the review for it.

Also, I changed my reviewing format halfway into 2019, so I’m not counting any of my reviews before that haha. Now that I changed my format, I just like this one SO MUCH BETTER. I don’t even like looking at the previous ones.

what blogging is actually like image

What Blogging is Actually Like // 10 TRUE FACTS About Blogging

This post was in the making for quite a while. When I was thinking up post ideas one day, because I was in a creative ideating mood, I came up with this post. There are small things about blogging which aren’t technically what blogging is about, but comes with the hobby. I simply wanted to share and lament over them, and bond over this hobby with everyone else.

Writing this post took up quite some time, and I spent a lot of time on deciding what to write and how to format it. But it was really fun and I like reading that post myself.

i.e. a post that doesn’t fall under a particular category like reviews, discussions or tags do.

me with an open book and a cup of tea

This post was written partly for shits and giggles, because I don’t really want to be reading less and I don’t regret reading so much. But there are times when reading takes away time for other random things that I could be doing. I wrote all of the things I would do if reading wasn’t my #1 priority.

top ten tuesday header image

This post was written in response to a Top Ten Tuesday prompt for favourite book tropes. I mentioned all my favourites tropes and recommended five books for every trope. This was fun to think about, because I never thought of my favourite tropes past top three. I had to go through my Goodreads and see what other tropes jumped out from my favourites, and then find more books to recommend for that trope.

a row of books with the letters H and M, featuring Haruki Murakami books.

I really like this photo. I took this back when I was doing a cluttered, reds/oranges/pinks theme for Instagram. This theme pushed me to add many things in the frame and go all out on eye-catching colours. This photo is my favourite because of the letters. One of my friends made the letters to make up my nickname “chume”, from which I borrowed H and M for this photo to talk about Haruki Murakami. Here’s the original Instagram post.*

*shameless plug, but follow me on Instagram for more pretty pictures!

the winternight trilogy discussion and review header image

Not sure how original this is, but this was one that I came up on the fly. I didn’t buddy read this trilogy with Teenu but we did read it around the same time. The normal review style was becoming kind of boring, and I wanted to do some kind of discussion because I NEEDED TO TALK about this trilogy. And so, this blog post was born!

Teenu and I basically just discussed with free reign over text. Later, I compiled all of our texts and rearranged them so they make some sense to the readers. It took a LONG time for me to put together, but I’m really glad with it.

kill me heal me header image

My enjoyment of writing a review is directly proportional to how much I liked what I’m reviewing. Kill Me, Heal Me is my #1 Kdrama right now, and I HAD to do justice to it in my review. I spent a LONG time for this blog post. After the drama, I wrote a lot of notes in my bullet journal. Then I let myself think over it for a month or so and come up with more before actually writing the review.

Talking about it, and putting my thoughts down with images and everything, was really nice. I really like how it turned out as well. And I’m pretty sure others like it too because it receives quite a bit of attention from search engines haha.

girl working on her laptop

I actually have quite a few!

Many of my posts have made their way to front pages when similar terms are searched. In fact, if you search “Doctor Stranger review”, my review is the first result to come up! It also shows up for variations of the term. My review of W: Two Worlds and Kill Me, Heal Me have made their way to the first few links as well.

My book reviews are getting attention from search engines too! My posts on Everything, Everything, Girl Online Going Solo, and Genuine Fraud are the most popular from search engines.

And what I’ve mentioned above aren’t the only posts to be seen from search engines. There are many more, which leads to most of my views coming from search engines. Doctor Stranger review alone has received over 4000 views!!! When I first realized, I was amazed and I continue to be as this blog grows.

It was surreal to open my insights page notice that over 30,000 people have visited my blog and thought it’s worth it. I was so happy to see this.

Over the years, I’ve been writing posts and my motivation to blog has just been growing. It’s so weird to think that I’ve written hundreds of posts. This blog literally contains most of my thoughts and opinions from the last few years.

My follower count has been steadily increasing and the number hit 1600 just a couple weeks back. Again, this is so cool!

While 2019 has had it’s ups and downs for my blog, downs particularly in my blogging slumps, it’s had quite a few ups in the attention it’s been receiving. I’m so grateful that my blog is considered worth it and that people keep coming back.

Behind The Blogger Tag

Hey everyone!

It’s been a while since I did a tag, and I’m just in the mood for it now. I saw this tag over at The Book Corps* and instantly wanted to do it. I wasn’t explicitly tagged for it but hey, when has that ever stopped me?

This tag is all about blogging, and my life behind and/or alongside it. It’s super fun, so let’s get to it!

*I absolutely love Laura’s blog, and she does really nice tags so I highly suggest going over there. There’s a lot of great content to be seen.

The Rules

  • Thank the person who nominated you
  • Answer all the questions down below
  • Pingback to the creator: Ellyn @ Allonsythornraxx
  • Nominate 5+ bloggers you’d like to know more about to do this tag

I started blogging out of curiosity. I saw that there’s this thing called “share on your blog” on Goodreads (when I reviewed a book there) and was so intrigued. A google search on “what is a blog” lead me to WordPress, where I just made a blog without really thinking about it. In fact, I came up with my old blog name “light up the shining night stars” in a few seconds and just set up my blog.

As I spent more time figuring out about my blog, and finding others, I slowly learnt what blogging is. And that definition constantly expanded to include more content and niches.

I continue to blog because I’ve grown to love this hobby, and this community. Blogging is cathartic to me. Whenever I want to talk about something, no matter what about, I can blog about it without second-guessing because this is my space. It’s been almost 4 years since I started blogging, and I don’t see any sign of me wanting to quit. Sure, I took breaks, but I always come back.

Listables! I absolutely love writing posts like “10 things..”/”7 reasons…”/”10 books I love”. They’re super fun, especially because

  1. I love lists.
  2. It’s a great way to format a post.
  3. You get talk about your favourites in one post!
  4. And they always work out well.

They’re also fun! Whenever I write discussion posts or tips/advice, I try to make them into a list. Fun fact: listables capture attention better because you’re letting people know what exactly they can find in the blog post. It’s not vague. Points also help summarize content well, which works better for readers of the post.

Top three in what way? Views? Likes? Comments? My favourites? What. How am I supposed to choose randomly? This is hard.

Top three blog posts in terms of views:

Haha I see a pattern.

Honestly, I don’t have many things. Being productive gives me a lot of satisfaction, and I’m also a procrastinator. This means that I technically don’t look to “relax” much.

The few things I do to relax are:

  • Read. This is kinda obvious though. But I like reading romance books or YA contemporary, specifically. They always make me relax and feel good.
  • Listen to music and journal. I really like bullet journalling, and I sometimes journal in my notebook as well. Listening to chill music and doing it calms me.
  • Blog life updates. This is another thing that relaxes me. It’s fun to just keep typing as my thoughts flow. Sometimes the blog posts turn out good, sometimes they don’t. But the process is nice.

  • Books! Obviously haha.
  • Cute socks. I just love them, and I love wearing them.
  • Winter wear. Jackets/Sweatshirts/Hoodies/Shrugs. I love wearing layers, and I wear one of these whenever it’s cold enough to.

Coming up as the first link when Kdrama reviews are searched. This is why my Kdrama reviews are the most viewed—because a lot of views comes from search engines. If you search “doctor stranger review” or “w two world review”, my link comes first in the results! This what I’m most proud of. Even with business blogs and websites about Kdramas, my blog managed to show up first.

I hit 50,000 views! I’m at 52k right now. I’m so proud that my curiosity-filled random start grew into a proper blog which people want to visit.

I’m also proud of myself for maintaining a blog without succumbing to the “follow a niche” advice. Blogs receive more views and are more successful by sticking to a specific niche. But I’m not ready to stick to one. I want this space to show all of me, and I’m glad that I still keep it that way.

Work aesthetic

Read! It lead me to blogging haha. Reading is, and will always be, my #1 hobby.

Bullet Journalling. I’m a huge planner. Making to-do lists every day, or for every thing, and checking things off gives me a lot of satisfaction. It allows me to clearly see how productive I’ve been, which I like. Bullet journalling takes it to the next level with trackers, so many different spreads, and the flexibility to record everything in one place. I love it.

Bookstagram! While my bookstagram account isn’t big or super aesthetic, I really do like it. It’s fun to try out new ways of taking photos of books, try out themes, and make a feed. Interacting with other bookstagrammers is nice too. I love that we all love books so much.

Speaking of, y’all should really follow me on Instagram.* I don’t post very often, but I do have some good photos and thoughts on books.

*shameless self-plug lol.

Ohhh I have quite a few. Top three? Um.

  • People chewing without keeping their mouths closed. I HATE this. I even tell my mum to chew with her mouth closed. I do not want to see food being chewed, or hear the sounds. Besides, it’s actually not good to do it. More often than not, food will end up coming out by mistake. Especially if the person is also talking while chewing. That annoys me so much.
  • Spelling mistakes/typos/misplaced commas/extra spaces/etc. Everything to do with grammar and typing. For example, my friend and I were working on a report a few days back. He was typing and I was narrating most of the content. Every time there was an extra space, or a typo, I’d make him correct it first before continuing typing. I cannot concentrate if they’re there.
  • People not taking care of things they borrowed from me. No, I don’t care if it’s just a pen. You should take care of it. Not leave it on some random desk, or lose the pen cap. I want my things taken care of. I’m a little extra with my stationary items and books, more than other things.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned that I know some carnatic* music? I even went for carnatic singing classes, and quite a few of the songs are still in my head. Sometimes, I find myself humming them too. I actually don’t like carnatic music simply because my mum pushed me towards it so much. It’s nice, but if I was not forced towards it I might have liked/enjoyed it more. I stay away from it now though.

My voice isn’t too bad as well! I sound very bad when singing modern music but I’m not too bad at carnatic music. I come from a line of really good singers. My mum’s voice is beautiful, and my maternal granddad sang really well until right before he passed away at 97 years old. People used to come to visit him specifically to hear him sing, and he even taught free classes when I was a kid.

*copying the definition from the Internet, in case you don’t know what it is. Carnatic music or Karnāṭak music or Karnāṭaka Saṃgīta is a system of music commonly associated with the southern part of the Indian subcontinent, with its area roughly confined to five modern states of India: Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh,[w: Kerala|Kerala]], Telangana and Tamil Nadu.

OMG That Song Book Tag

Annyeonghaseyo! I can now say that I know most basic conversational words and phrases in Korean. I just said hello formally. Informally, it would be annyeong!

I saw this tag over at Bookmark Your Thoughts and thought it’s really so here I am, doing it! This tag combines two things I love the most: books and music. So of course, I have to do it.

Song: I love love love Fall Into You by Night Terrors of 1927. I first heard it YEARS ago and I’m still very in love with it.

Book: The Selection by Kiera Cass. I don’t like it’s sequels much but book 1 always has a special place in my heart. Whenever I don’t have new books to read or I feel like rereading something, I pick it up. And I enjoy it.

Song: Naturally by Selena Gomez and The Scene. 8th grade, what a cringey period.

Book: House of Night series by P.C. and Kristin Cast. I also had a problem of leaving books and series unfinished so I actually spent years waiting for the sequels and read all 12! Oof. Now that I think back, it was cringey af and it didn’t have much interesting plot to go on for TWELVE BOOKS.

Song: Breathe by Lauv! What a good song. I only found Lauv recently through To All The Boys I’ve Love Before movie. An IRL friend told to check out all of the artists’s songs so I’m doing that one by one!

Book: The Hating Game by Sally Thorne! I finally followed the hype and bought the book. and I LOVED IT. While writing the review for it a couple days back, I really felt like rereading it so I am! It’s just as good the second time round. Click here to read my review!

Song: Right now, it’s Epiphany by BTS! I’m currently falling in love with myself and becoming more confident, so yeah. Epiphany is the first BTS song that I truly love and am obsessed with. I looked for more songs like it by them but didn’t find another, sadly. Jin’s voice is B E A U T I F U L.

Book: Fangirl by Ranbow Rowell! Cath is me and I relate to her so much.

Song: I Wear Speedos by Mikey Bustos! I liked Despacito enough but I LOVE it’s parody by Mikey Bustos. Although I have a feeling that the parody of BTS’s IDOLYou Took A Sample Of My Pasta will be my new fav weird song soon.

Book: The Other Daughter by Lisa Gardner! It was my first book by the author and I must have reread it quite a few times. No other book ever gave me the same mystery chills, until I read other books by the same author. It’s still somehow special to me, though.

Song: I have quite a few, actually! Some old ones are Beautiful Now by Zedd and If I Lose Myself by OneRepublic. The newest one is IDOL which has mad beats. It took a while for me to like the song but once I was in the mood for a pump up song and this came up on shuffle and I really liked it.

Book: Warcross by Marie Lu because one day I want to be the creator of such amazing tech things which are in her book.

Song: I have a playlist for chill and relaxing songs, actually. Other than the one below, I’ll choose Technicolor Beat by Oh Wonder and You Are Enough by Sleeping At Last.

Book: Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid! I absolutely love that adorable book. Also The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang.

Song: I’m not really sure.. I’m not ashamed of my music. I guess I’ll choose Believix for this? I don’t usually say that I love this song but I actually really do. I know all the words and I can sing it perfectly.

Book: There are so many trashy books I love XD A very recent fav is Style by Chelsea M. Cameron.

Song: Breathless by Shankar Mahadevan! Ahhh what a bloody good song! I still really love it. I actually listened to it a LOT and had the lyrics by heart in no time.

Book: I LOVED Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine! When I found it in the library at 11, I fell in love immediately. It’s a really good and adventurous middle grade book.

Tag, you’re it!

The Shuffle Song Tag

Happy Friday y’all! It’s almost the weekend! Well, technically. But since I have classes on Saturdays as well, my weekend starts tomorrow evening. #sadlife

I’m just not in the mood to write up a proper post and plus I don’t have the time so I thought I’ll do a tag today. I saw this tag over at Diversion3000 and it’s been a while since I’ve done a music tag, so let’s go!

  • Hit shuffle play on any devices or apps that you listen to music on.
  • List the first ten songs that play.
  • Tag some people!

My complete playlist has 1217 songs at the moment, of various languages. I’m hitting shuffle now..

1. Invincible by Ruelle

I’ve been a Ruelle fan ever since the first two minutes of Shadowhunters where her song Monsters was played. This is one of my favourite songs by her. I love the vibe of her work.

2. Falling by Jo Hyun-ah

This song is from the soundtrack of the W: Two World Korean drama. It’s actually one of the Korean songs I have that I haven’t listened to much. I usually keep songs I think I might like in the future even if I don’t like them at the moment. After a while if I don’t end up liking it, I remove it from my playlist. Jury’s still out on this one.

3. If I Lose Myself by OneRepublic

OneRepublic is a brilliant band and this is my second favourite song by them, coming only after Counting Stars. I love the chorus.

4. What You Wanted by OneRepublic

Another song by OneRepublic! I came upon this song while listening to a curated OneRepublic playlist on YouTube and loved it. The lyrics ❤

5. Tum Hi Ho Bandhu by Neeraj Shridhar & Kavita Seth

Okay so I was, at one point, completely OBSESSED with this song. It’s from the Bollywood movie Cocktail and it a really good upbeat dance song.

6. Teri Jhuki Nazar by Pritan ft. Shafqat Amanat Ali

This is one of the Hindi songs on my playlist that I rarely listen to but still don’t feel like deleting. It’s just that, at random (and rare) times when I do want to listen to it, I love it.

7. Sun Raha Hai Na Tu

Another Hindi song! While I didn’t love the Aashiqui 2 movie, I really liked the songs in the movie. I also prefer the female version over the male. I always sing along to the songs from this movie, no matter how sick of them I am.

8. Galliyan by Ankit Tiwari

FOUR continuous Hindi songs? Whew. Anyway this song is from the movie Ek Villain. I loved the movie and I love the songs. I like the male version only slightly more than the female, both are really good.

9. Invisible by Taylor Swift

I didn’t even know this song existed until a friend of mine told me to listen to it, and I’m not a fan. It’s probably the least listened to TS song on my playlist and I’m pretty sure I’ll be removing it soon.

10. Kadhal Ennulle by Nivin & Nazriya Nazim

I believe I mentioned this in a favourite songs post recently. When I love Tamil songs, I completely FALL IN LOVE. Same thing happened with this song. Every time I listen to this song, I just want to close my eyes and sway to it. Even if you don’t understand Tamil, I definitely recommend it.

I tag..

YOU! If you want to do it, go ahead! I wasn’t tagged for it but I don’t care about that. If I really want to do a tag, I do it, and you should.

How many songs are there in your playlist? Are there songs of various languages? Do you like any of the songs I mentioned above? Let me know in the comments!

The Avocado Tag!

Happy Sunday guys! I originally planned to do a Sunday Post today talking about my week but I procrastinated on it and my day has gone a bit, so I don’t feel like doing that anymore. While thinking about what to post, I remembered this.

A wonderful blogger friend of mine, Ana Regina from Diversion3000 created this tag and tagged me to do it a while back. Thank you! Y’all should definitely check out her blog because it’s filled to the brim with fun things.

Les Rules:

  1. Thank the person who tagged you giving a link to their blog.
  2. Mention le creatorrrrr of dis tag giving a link to their blog!
  3. Publish this post using the tag on wordpress: AvocadoTag (all together).
  4. Answer les questions.
  5. Tag at a minimum 10 people to do this tag and let them know you tagged them.
  6. The questions are the same for everyone, you answer the questions and the people you tagged answer them too!
  7. Add the Avocado tag logo in you post.

the avocado tag logo

Okay now let’s dive into the questions!

What things do you like doing the most during summer?

Complaining about how it’s not winter. Honestly, though. I hate summers and I’m glad that we didn’t really have summer this year. (our seasons have messed up lol)

Other than that… wow I got nothing. I don’t usually eat ice cream at all, I hate wearing clothes that don’t cover up all of my skin and I don’t go on vacations much.

What’s your favorite summer drink?

Cold coffee. It’s my favourite cold drink and summer’s the best time to drink cold things. Not like I don’t during winters though.

Do you like avocados?

I do! I love avocados. We call it butterfruit here so it actually was after I googled what avocados are (because people were talking about it online) and only then did I realize that butterfruit is avocado!

I fell in love with it when I had butterfruit milkshake in a shop near my house. I was trying all milkshakes and once I had this one, I stuck to it. I drank it very frequently for a few months and even got one of my best friends into it. We both go to drink it together now.

Do you like spicy food? If yes, what’s your fave spicy food? If not, why not lol?

I absolutely love spicy food! In fact, I can’t eat more than one sweet item a day because I’ll have maxed my sweet limit. I don’t even eat some sweets because they’re too sweet for me.

On the other hand, I eat anything spicy. We Indians are known for our sweets and spices, so we have a LOT of spicy food. There’s a complete different range of spicy foods state-to-state. I can not pick one. Whenever we want spice, we just add more spices to that dish.

But out of everything, my favourite spicy foods are the chats. Specifically bhel puri when it’s overloaded with spices. My mouth is watering just at the thought.

bhel puri.jpg

What’s the last thing you’ve eaten?

I had curd rice at the end of lunch. Since I’ve had meals ending with curd rice all my life, I now don’t feel like I haven’t finished a meal if I haven’t ended it with any curd item.

Other than that, I had something we call puliodhare. It’s a sour-based rice item but we added more spices so it was very spicy today.

Last song you’ve listened to?

I’m currently listening to Epiphany by BTS on repeat while writing this post. I’ve listened to it so many times since I first heard it’s release a few days back that I have the whole song memorized now.

I’m not a BTS stan or part of the ARMY but I do appreciate some songs of theirs. My friend, who’s a BTS stan, was raving about it so I listened to it and I’m in love.

Tell us a funny anecdote you’ve had.

Okay so the most recent one happened in my Management and Entrepreneurship class, and it cracked us all up. This will be a semi-long story. So our teacher wanted to show how effective planning is in the smallest things so she had us do an activity.

We had two teams of 6 people each (to compete), two observers (I was one) and a camera man (to record the activity). Each team made a ball with papers roughly the size of a cricket ball. The teacher told them to pass the ball around within the team for 7 rounds, without any person holding the ball for a period of time, and the observers had to record the time.

It was easy, the teams just passed the ball normally. The times were 18 and 22 seconds. Then she said that they have to do it within 10 seconds. Both the teams got the idea to have one person hold the ball and touch it to every other person’s palm. The time ended up within 5 seconds but it was against the rules.

What was funny was that the camera guy commented that it looked as if that one person was giving chatni to everyone. It was like she was giving small amounts of food to every person. It was very funny.

The teams somehow managed to do it within 10 seconds with other strategies. Then ma’am made it 5 seconds. Everyone protested and she said that it’s possible to do it in 2 seconds so we should get on it. Both the teams came up with hilarious stuff and soon we were laughing more than actually doing the activity.

I came home and demonstrated all of it to my mom and she was laughing too.

Would you rather be a zebra with rainbow stripes or a zebra whose stripes glow in the dark?

*please include these pictures when you do the post*

Rainbow stripes! I almost told glow in the dark but then I would want to be invisible in the dark so hehe rainbow stripes. Plus I’ll be pretty and colourful.

Can you draw a shark with your opposite hand (the hand you don’t use to write nor draw)? Show a picture!

Yo I don’t draw well enough with my dominant hand itself. Sad. Okay let me try.

very poor attempt at drawing a shark

You can laugh at it. I am.

What are 3 things that make you laugh?

  • When the teacher says something to the class or asks something and one person replies with a sarcastic or stupid answer. This always cracks the class up and I really like such people because they can crack the tension in a room instantly. Shoutout to Shiv, Tanishq and Saurabh from my current class. (not like they’ll read this post but still)
  • A lot of tumblr posts. Honestly, tumblr posts hold all sorts of stories.
  • Sassy and sarcastic story telling. Most of time it’s me telling the story and I have to make a very hard attempt at keeping a straight face to sell the story. But when I’m listening, it’s super funny.

I tag:

CharleyShealeaBethDhruvFannaAnukriti and anyone else who wants to do it!

I had fun doing this tag! Very sad about having to admit to my lackluster drawing talent though XD How was/is your Sunday?

How I Choose My Books Tag

Because obviously everyone is interested in how I choose books to read.* I saw this tag over at Ash’s blog For The Love Of Books Blog and found it super nice so I decided to do it.

I’ve been reading way more books this year and I’m really happy? I’m making such good progress on my Goodreads Reading Challenge for this year. I’ve also been liking more of the books that I read than before so obviously I need to document how I’m doing this. More for myself to refer back later than anything else.

*let’s pretend that’s true for my sake

Find a book on your bookshelves with a blue cover. What made you want to pick up this book?

A court of mist and fury

Because this is one of my most favourite books and I LOVE IT. ACOMAF is bae ❤

Think of a book you didn’t expect to enjoy, but did. Why did you read it in the first place?

me and milo the great

The author reached out to me to review this book and the synopsis was very vague, hence making me think that I won’t like it. I’m really glad I gave it a chance, though! I ended up giving it five stars!

Read my review here.

Stand in front of your bookshelf with your eyes closed and pick a book at random. How did you discover this book?

Sad I have to stand up and go to my shelf for this. I’m sitting on the floor and blogging. (I’m very lazy ok.)

I found this book through the book blogging community! I saw it on social media and read a few reviews on it. When I read that it’s about a magical carnival, I was immediately interested. In fact, my tweet about it is actually printed in the UK paperback version! I went and bought the book after it released because I’m in it lol.

Pick a book that someone personally recommended to you. What did you think of it?

My best friend had been trying to get me to read The Name of The Wind for over a YEAR and I finally read it when he lent me his copy. First of all, isn’t this version really pretty??

The name of the wind

I thought it was nice but I wasn’t blown away by it. It’s my best friend’s favourite book and I just didn’t like it that much. I rated it 4/5 stars.

Pick a book up that you discovered through booktube/bookstagram/book blogs. Did it live up to the hype?

NO Truthwitch did NOT live up to the hype. I STILL see hype around it and I don’t understand why. I didn’t like the characters, the plot was simply okay and nothing was explained properly. I don’t even know the concepts properly and I’ve read TWO books of the series. I believed in the hype naively and bought both of the books. My biggest regrets and I since then I don’t buy books based on hype online.

Find a book on your shelves with a one-word title. What drew you to this book?

Hmm I already spoke about Caraval and Truthwitch.. let’s go with Legend by Marie Lu.

Nothing specifically drew me to this book. Back before I knew the book community online, I used to randomly pick books in the library or just buy some. I read the synopsis for Legend on Amazon after I saw that it was on a discount and immediately ordered the whole trilogy. Now I realise that if I didn’t like it, I would have wasted a lot of money but fortunately I really liked it.

What book did you discover through a film/TV adaptation?

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I don’t have this one on my shelf as I read it from the library.

I found the movie randomly and ended up REALLY liking it. I only realized about a couple years later that it’s a book and then read it. I like the book better lol.

Think of your all-time favorite book(s). When did you read these and why did you pick them up in the first place?

  • Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine which I randomly picked in the library when I was a pre-teen. I will reread it any day and still love it.
  • The Other Daughter by Lisa Gardner was also a random pick at the library. It was my first book in the mystery genre and it was the one that got me into the genre.
  • The Selection by Kiera Cass. I don’t like the other books of the series as much, tbh I hate books 4 and 5, but the first book will always be dear to me. I can reread it dozens of times and still like it. Maxerica forever.

Anything But Books Tag

If you haven’t noticed yet, I talk a lot about books on this blog. It’s pretty much a book blog even though I don’t want to use that label because I do blog about other things. But yet, books dominate.

And just like book talk dominates this blog, book tags dominate the blogging world. You’re more likely to find really good book tags than tags for other niches. Most of the tags I’ve done are about books. This sad imbalance is the reason I decided to pitch in for the other side with my Music Habits Tag.

I saw this tag over at Bookchanted and I knew I had to do it because 1) it’s a nice tag and 2) it’s nice even though it’s not about books. The second point deserves merit, okay.

1. Name a cartoon you love.

Dude sad. I wish this wasn’t the first question. I don’t really watch cartoons? I don’t really like them? So I have to regretfully leave this part without a proper answer.

2. What is your favourite song right now?

I can’t decide! I binge-watched a couple Korean dramas recently and I’m completely in love with their soundtracks! I’ll mention my top three at the moment:

All three are from the kdrama It’s Okay That’s Love which I watched last. This month’s favourite songs post is going to be filled with Korean songs lol.

3. What could you do for hours that isn’t reading?

Blogging! I tend to sit for hours and type up a bunch of blog posts and schedule them instead of writing one blog post at a time. I don’t find the right window of time. Scheduling has made my life so much easier.

4. What’s something you love to do that your followers would be surprised by?

Um.. I feel like I’ve spoken about everything on this blog?? This is almost like a diary of me. That too be “surprised” by? Is it valid if I just talk about my love for cute socks instead?

Oh wait I know! I realized this while writing for the next question. I love to explain memes to people around me. I’ve explained to at least half a dozen friends about what millenial, gen Z etc means. They finally understand a little more when I share memes on my personal Instagram story XD

5. What is your favourite unnecessarily favourite thing to learn about?

MEMES. Everything meme culture. I will google things I don’t understand in memes. And it happens often because I’m not in the American society to understand all of them immediately. For example, the recent video of a kid yodeling at Walmart. I don’t understand why it’s so popular?

But other than that? Random things really.

6. What’s something unusual you know how to do?

Does this have to be something learnt? I can make a wave with both my eyebrows. I’m actually really good at waggling them. Sometimes when a friend makes eye contact with me randomly, I make a wave and MOST of them immediately try to do it themselves, fail, then shoot me a disappointed expression. It doesn’t matter if it has happened before, they still try it. It’s very funny.

7. Name something you made in the last year and show us if you can.

I made more lucky stars for my Instagram? I used to be really artsy and craftsy but ever since year 2 of college has started I’ve been swamped with things ALL the time. During the holidays I just read books to make up for the semester. In fact, the number of books after this semester has started (it’s been two and a half months) is probably 1/10th of how many I read over the three week break.

8. What is your most recent personal project?

TO TAKE BETTER PHOTOS. For both Instagram and blog. I think I’ve succeeded for my newest theme (to come out in a few days) on Instagram but I haven’t made much progress for the blog. At this point I’m trying to use my Instagram photos for the blog as well, but I’m not very happy with it.

There’s no time, y’all! I am doing a small project for the college, though. Does that count?

9. Tell us something that you think about often.

The uselessness of this way of life and how almost everyone is depressed. Yes I’m a real downer in real life.

10. Give us something that is your favourite but make it oddly specific.

I like cute socks. I really REALLY like them. I’m in love with them. They’re the highlight of my day most days now. I got my mom to buy me a few pairs of cute socks recently (I had coloured but not printed) and now whenever I need a pick up, I look at my socks.

11. Say the first thing that pops into your mind.

K bro.

This is my signature line and I’m not even sorry 😂

I didn’t really get tagged for this so if you want to do this tag, consider yourself tagged!

Do you talk about books significantly more than anything else? Name an oddly specific thing you love. What songs are you loving at the moment? Let me know below!

20 questions book tag

Book tags are the best tags. There’s an almost abundance of them, they’re fun and they talk about B O O K S. What else do we need?

This tag was created by buydebook over on Goodreads and I was tagged to do this by Rebecca—thank you so much for tagging me! I’m finally getting around to doing it over two months later, lol. #timeliness Go show her some love y’all, she’s awesome.

More than 5! Two is a little less, three is PERFECT, 4 is manageable, 5 is a little over and more than that is definitely over. If a series has over 5 books, you can be sure that I will not reread it unless I have nothing else to do.

I have a love-hate relationship with cliffhangers. I absolutely HATE them for the same reason everyone else hates them—the suspense is too much and we cannot wait until the next book releases.

BUT. I love cliffhangers sometimes because it gives me ALL. THE. FEELS. and I love nothing more than having a bunch of feels. It’s reason #5204* of why I love books.

*just picked a random number there

This is an ongoing debate for everyone and I know that most book-lovers pick hardbacks. But I pick paperback.

I can almost here you saying whaaaaaat but let me explain. Harcopies are durable, look good both with and without the cover, their spines don’t break while reading and they genuinely make you feel good.

On the other hand, paperbacks cost less. I wish I could afford all the books that I wan’t, but I can’t be spending like that. Nowadays I’ve taken to selling back books at the second-hand store and buying others. So being a practical person who prefers reading more books than owning them, I choose paperback.

bookworm tangled gif

Petition to ban this question from being asked, EVER. don’t do this to me. I’m just sitting here, listening to music and answering harmless (or so I thought) questions about books. Don’t make me choose unless you tell me specifics like my favourite in a genre AND category.

Whatever book I choose, I’ll feel like I’m betraying my other favourites and I can’t do this. There are too many.

Not answering this bye.

Hm… Sweet Thing by Renee Carlino. I also really didn’t like Too Late by Colleen Hoover even though I like all other books of hers. I can only remember these two that I ranted about A LOT immediately.

6. Love triangles, yes or no?

I’m a b s o l u t e l y done with the trope and I will be happy to never read a book featuring it again. It’s been way overdone and almost always the girl goes for the non-reliable bad boy! I try to stay clear of books that have love triangles.

hell no gif

It’s a book that I DNFed not one chapter in. I heard a good review on #nerd by Cambria Herbert on Goodreads and decided to check out a sample first. On a hunch. GOOD THING GUYS BECAUSE I HATED IT.

It has the common athletic popular guy and nerdy shy girl, which I don’t mind on occasion. BUT he was only in college for the sport and women and I?? just?? hate that??

Picture this: it’s his first tutoring session with the female MC* and what does he do? Say “I’ll be back in a few” and ends up doing stuff with another girl in the corner of the library for a long time, keeping this poor girl waiting. He’s an absolute jackass and I don’t care about his character arc, I’m done bye.

*main characters

At the time of writing this post (which is about a week before it’s published), I’m reading The Belles by Dhonieele Clayton. It’s really interesting and I’m LOVING the concept and world-building.

the belles.jpg

I recommended The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss to a friend of mine while reading it, and he actually finished reading it before me! He’s well through the second book at the moment while I just finished it about a couple hours ago.

the name of the wind.jpg

Um? I don’t know? I usually don’t tend to go far back, though? It’ll probably be one of the few classics I’ve read..

Restore Me by Tahereh Mafi! It released earlier this month and I read it as soon as I could! I devoured it in a short span of time, probably shouldn’t have done that since I’m pretty sure I would have missed small details, and I actually got a friend hooked onto it as well. I told her the story and now she’s as invested into it as I am hehe.

restore me

Click here to read my review on it!

So how do I break this, by genre? Category? Just like I can’t pick one favourite book, I can’t pick one favourite author!

Okay I know, I’ll just mention the top auto-buy authors that I love:

  • Colleen Hoover
  • Sarah J. Maas
  • Penny Reid
  • Mariana Zapata (new fav!)
  • Mia Sheridan
  • Marie Lu
  • Cassandra Clare (my longest fav author)

Borrowing! I’ve taken to buy books only after I’ve read them because I haven’t had the best luck with buying new books and loving them. I can name at least three books on my shelf that I wish I didn’t buy.

The best solution I found, which I stick to now, is buying books from a second hand bookstore. If I don’t like the book, I sell it back for half the price or if I like it, I keep it. Simply and easy.

TRUTHWITCH! Believing the hype, I bought the first two books and I regret it now.

Bookmarks! It’s not just the dog-ear hate that most of book lovers have, but I generally hate folded pages in any books be it novels, notebooks or textbooks. I hate the crease it leaves.

Only one? Bruh, no. I’m mentioning multiple.

  • Lady Midnight/Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare
  • Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
  • A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
  • The Selection by Kiera Cass

When I was younger, I was baffled at the concept. I saw a picture of a girl reading while listening to music in the newspaper and I told my mum, “how? how is she doing that? how is she concentrating?” because I used to give my music all the attention whenever I listened. But in the last years of high school, I started using slow music to tune out other sounds and now I’m actually okay with it.

I don’t prefer it but I would more likely listen to music while reading if I’m in public.

Depends on the story. If it’s romance or contemporary, I would prefer one POV because we’re focusing on one character mostly. But in other genres, I prefer multiple POVs so I can know what’s happening with everyone and keep up instead of having “catch-ups”.

If I get totally immersed into the book, I read it in one sitting if possible (usually isn’t). But for huge books that I’m not completely into like The Book Thief and The Name of The Wind, I take my time. I don’t like them enough to breathe it in ASAP but it’s enough to make me want to finish reading them.

I generally do better reading books that I’ve picked up myself than recommendations or reviews. I usually take longer for those.

The Crown by Kiera Cass! After the disaster of The Heir, I did NOT want to read the last book. I was regretting reading The Heir itself. But when I saw the cover of The Crown? SO BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL, GUYS. I WAS IN LOVE. I ordered it immediately and read it later.

the crown

I still catch myself admiring the cover on my shelf.

Music Habits Tag

Today, it’s very hard to find anyone who does not listen to music every single day. Or at least on a regular basis. It doesn’t matter what type of music. I believe that music brings people together, and it’s true! If you found someone with music tastes similar to yours, you’d more likely become good friends than not.

I did the Reading Habits Tag last month and on impulse, looked for a music habits tag but didn’t find one. And you know what they say—if what you want doesn’t exist, make it yourself. Whether that’s a film, a book or even a blog meme.

So here we are, with my first ever original tag!

A few tiny rules:

  • Tag the creator—that’s me! So I can read all your answers!
  • Thank the person who tagged you.
  • Answer all the questions.
  • Tag at least three friends.

Do you download songs or stream on apps like Spotify, Wink?

Both! I prefer downloading so I can listen offline but I also listen on Saavn when I’m trying out new albums.

What’s your current favourite song?

Call It What You Want by Taylor Swift! It’s such a subtle feel-good song.

Last song you listened to?

My playlist is on shuffle as I type this. The song playing now is You Got Me by Colbie Calliat. This, also, a really nice feel-good song. I found it from the movie Letters to Juliet.

Who are your all-time favourite artists?

  1. Night Terrors of 1927
  2. Kodaline
  3. Sia
  4. Ed Sheeran
  5. Sleeping At Last
  6. Lorde

Have you been to any concerts?

Nope, sadly. There aren’t many concerts held in the city I live and the rare they are, the tickets are really expensive.

Do you play any instruments?

I wish I did! I really wanted to learn the piano when I was younger but there weren’t any teachers around and I was too anti-social to go out and attend far away.

Do you play your songs on shuffle or choose a playlist?

I tend to shuffle pretty much all the time. I only have one playlist and that’s for when I’m travelling in the college bus. Those songs are perfect to sleep to and I fall asleep for that one hour journey.

Name one song that you always skip when it comes up on shuffle.

Surefire by John Legend. I like the song but I’m just NEVER in the mood for it.

Do you prefer playing songs on speaker or listening in ear/headphones?

The only time I play music on speaker is when I’m home alone. My parents don’t really like English songs, plus they have curse words so I’m conscious.

Is there any popularly liked song that you don’t like?

I’m not sure if this is really liked much, but it is popular. Look What You Made Me Do by Taylor Swift. I just did not like it. I did not understand the hype, other than the obvious change in her music.

Where do you usually find new music? Example through shuffle online, recommendations.

Usually I find new music on YouTube. I choose one song I like and keep the autoplay on. At some point new songs play and that’s how I find new music.

I don’t tend to like finding new music through recommendations. I just prefer it to come up on shuffle, playing amongst songs I like. Sometimes when my friends really push me on some songs, I download them and wait for it to come up on shuffle. It might take months but it’s a good method for me.

Do you like songs based on tunes/beats or lyrics?

I tend to not see lyrics almost at all. I like songs based on the tunes and beats. I learn to like the lyrics later on.

The funny thing is that even though I don’t care about the lyrics, after listening to the songs a few times, I automatically memorize the lyrics. The point when I can sing along for most of the song is when I know I need to find new music. And I can sing along to a LOT of songs.

There was this one time when a friend was treating us at a restaurant for his birthday. I was singing along to every song that came on the overhead speakers and after a while all that friend did was look to me when a new song starts to see if I’m mouthing along. But to be honest, it wasn’t much of a challenge because ALL the songs were the really popular ones.

Name one song that you think everyone should listen to.

I could choose a few but choosing one is a little hard..

I’ll go with Saturn by Sleeping At Last. I LOVE this song. It makes me emotional every time.

Four things tag

four things tag.png

Daily blogging drains the ideas out of you. And what better to make a blog post out of at this time than a tag? I googled lifestyle tags (getting slightly bored of book tags, tbh) and found this.

So I’m taking this tag from Jenny in neverland‘s blog, and I’ll sing to Anohana’s theme songs while writing this blog post. Because Anohana’s songs are LIFE. I love them. I love the show. I love everything about it. I could fangirl all day but I’ll stop and move on to the tag.

Four jobs I’ve had

I’m still a student in college and I’ve never had a job. So I’m just going to skip this one.

Four things I don’t eat

  1. Cooked tomatoes. I HATE cooked tomatoes. I don’t like the taste of it and I always pick them out of my food as much as possible. But my dad loves them so when he cooks, my food is literally filled with only them. It’s hard to separate them from the rice so I end up eating a lot of it. I don’t mind raw ones on pizza, chaat etc though. Except in a burger.
  2. Cooked onions. I don’t mind eating raw onion pieces/rings as it is, or in any food item. But I hate cooked onions. My dad puts them in sambar (it’s a type of gravy we mix with rice and eat) and even if he carefully only puts the liquid without onions on my plate, I can taste the onions in the sambar and I HATE it. I still eat it, but doesn’t mean I like it.
  3. Most leaves. Except coriander, which I actually like. I don’t really mind if the greens are mashed and made to gravy or added in chaat but I will NOT eat them in my Indian meals. I always pick and keep them aside. I probably count the number of leaves I’ve eaten in my hands, and those were had accidentally because I didn’t notice them when eating.
  4. MEAT. Also eggs. I’m a pure vegetarian (not vegan) so I don’t eat meat and eggs. I haven’t even touched an egg except once for a science experiment. And I always stay away from meat. My family are all vegetarians so it’s tradition for me to be one as well, but other than that I will gladly stay a vegetarian.

Four places I’ve lived

Funny thing.. I’ve lived in the same place all my life: Bangalore, India. I’ve never moved. I studied all 12 years of school in one school, went to kindergarten nearby and now I’m going to college in the same city. I live at home with my parents and travel to college everyday. Travel takes out about two hours of my day on normal days (without extra traffic).

Four of my favourite foods

  1. Pizza. I LOVE PIZZA. This blog’s tagline is Books, planners and pizza. It used to be “and dreams” but I just love pizza too much so I changed it. Pizza is associated with happy memories. My best friends and I bond over pizza. Legit, when we meet after a long time (translation: a month) we plan to have pizza. When we have a little cash each, we pool it in and get pizza. WE. LOVE. PIZZA. I even feel weird having pizza with others because it’s our thing. We sit on the floor of my room and order in if we’re buying enough to be delivered.
  2. Chaat. This is an Indian street food which is the BEST THING EVER. The only reason it’s not first is because there’s no cheese in any of the chaats. Oh yeah there are MANY types of chaat. There’s whole menu. Pani puri, bhel puri, dahi puri, samosa chaat, kachori chaat.. just typing all these names makes my mouth water. I would really LOVE to have some right now. They’re all spicy and tangy, unless you add the sweet sauce which makes it a little sweet. I like my chaats really spicy.
  3. Masala dosa. Until about a year back, the only thing I ate when I went to south Indian restaurants was masala dosa. Dosa is kind of like a pancake (I’ve heard this comparison but I’m not sure if they’re similar). It’s really thin and is crunchy. Masala dosa is basically dosa, covered in spicy sauce, wrapped around a small bit of cooked potato with onions and spices and served with two types of gravies. I really don’t know if I’m explaining this right, but masala dosa is a gift to the world. It’s still one of my favourite foods, just not number one anymore.
  4. Kolumbu rice. I seriously don’t know how to spell it in English, and I don’t even know if it has a name in English, but we’ll spell it as kolumbu in writing. Also the letter l isn’t pronounced like “ell”. I don’t know the phonetic spelling of the pronounciation. It’s a type of gravy, you can say, like sambar but it’s very tangy and sour and I love it. It can be made as thick or thin as you like and it tastes AMAZING. Kolumbu rice is my favourite home-made food dish. Basically you mix the kolumbu with rice and eat it along with maybe some vegetable dishes on the side. It’s more of a Tamilian* dish than an Indian one.

*Tamil=south Indian language. Tamilian=group of people who speak Tamil. Mostly originated out of the state Chennai in south India. (This has become more of a lesson in Indian culture than a tag)

Okay this post has already become too long. I’ll try to make my answers short now on.

Four movies I’ve watched more than once

  1. High School Musical. I watch it almost every month. It’s my comfort movie. The one I watch when I’m sad or feeling low. I also play it in the background while blogging sometimes, but I end up abandoning blogging and just watch it.
  2. Radio Rebel. I LOVE the concept of this movie. Tara is more comfortable under anonymity, broadcasting from her room and it’s kind of like blogging. Anonymous blogging.
  3. A Cinderella Story. Another comfort movie. I just love Chad Michael Murray and Hilary Duff, okay? I love the story. I also love any Cinderella retelling. I really love Another Cinderella Story starring Selena Gomez as well.
  4. Baghban. This is an old Bollywood movie. I used to watch it every time it came on TV and I NEVER got bored of it. My mom got bored after a couple times but I refused to let her watch anything else when it came on. It’s actually been quite a few years since I watched it last, main reason being I stopped watching TV. Now I really feel like watching it again.

Four TV shows I watch

I watch all these shows online/on demand and not on regular TV. Saying this because this will contradict my earlier statement of “not watching TV”.

  1. Stranger Things. Obviously! The whole world is obsessed with the show, including me.
  2. Riverdale. I don’t have time to watch the episodes every week as they come out, what with exams and all. I’ll binge it after it’s done airing this season. Just have to avoid spoilers until then.
  3. Modern Family. I love watching shows based on families. This show is really funny and the episodes are only half an hour, so I sneak one here and there.
  4. Jane the Virgin. I started watching this only last month and I LOVE IT. It’s so entertaining and there’s so much drama!

jane the virgin

Four things I’m looking forward to this year

There are hardly any days left! But I’ll try to come up with something.

  1. My birthday!!!!!!!!
  2. Seeing my best friends after SO LONG. They moved away for college and I can’t wait to see them again!
  3. To being done with almost all of my exams! I’ll have two in the first week of January and I’LL BE DONE WITH THIS SEMESTER! Finally! So ready to move on.
  4. And honestly? I’m looking forward to the last minute of this year. To being done with this year. So ready to move onto 2018.

Four things I can’t live without

Assuming things is inanimate object and not people..

  1. My phone
  2. Books
  3. Earphones
  4. A comb (lol)

Four places I’ve visited

  1. Hyderabad.
  2. Pondicherry.
  3. Chennai.
  4. Tirupathi.

(All are cities in India. I haven’t been abroad.)

Four pet peeves

  1. People cutting others off/talking over others.
  2. People expecting you to not be friends with a person they don’t like. I’m going to be friends with both of you, thank you very much. But if you keep this attitude going, goodbye.
  3. People chewing with their mouth open.
  4. People talking too loud.

Four things I wish I could do

  1. Play an instrument.
  2. Go on a trip with my friends. (I might be an adult but according to Indians and Indian parents, I’m not an adult until I get a proper job and get married. Still under my parents until then. I follow their rules.)
  3. Make friends easily. Introvert alert.
  4. Blog all day.

Four subjects I studied at school

  1. Computer Science (C++ coding)
  2. Science. 10th grade. Included biology, chemistry and physics. I also studied physics and chemistry individually for last 2 years of high school.
  3. English.
  4. Sanskrit. Third language. We studied three languages until 8th grade (English, Hindi and Sanskrit) and were given a choice between Sanskrit and Hindi for 9th and 10th grades.

Four things near me right now

  1. My phone, currently playing Anohana songs in a loop.
  2. Earphones, in case my parents get irritated with the music playing out loud.
  3. My bullet journal, with the blog post planning/schedule page open.
  4. A pencil, to write in the schedule. I always use a pencil so I can erase if I ever change anything.

And we’re done! Wow this post became REALLY long. I did NOT expect that. I don’t know why but my blogging juices have been flowing a lot recently and my posts end up longer than I mean for them to be. But I hope you enjoy them!

I did this tag without being tagged, so I’m tagging ALL of you! Feel free to do the tag if you want to! And I’ll be back with another blogmas post tomorrow. See ya!

Name four things near you right now. What are your four most favourite food? Is there any traditional food you love? Do you share any of my answers? Let me know your choices to everything in the comments! Or better yet, do the tag and pingback to my post so I can read it!

Reading Habits Tag

reading habits tag.png

For 99%* of us bookworms, books define us. Book characters are who we are and book worlds are our worlds. And bleeding from all those influences, reading habits are pretty noticeable considering we read ALL THE TIME.

*I assume there are some bookworms who actually manage to NOT be a made up of parts of all the books they’ve read, because they’re somehow immune?? HOW? They’re the “Divergent” of us. But I’m assuming they make up only 1%.

I saw this tag over at reviewsbysavi and it looked pretty cool (plus this blogmas is making me run out of ideas a little) so I’m doing it as well!

Bookmarks or a random piece of paper

First of all, where would I find a random piece of paper from?? I’ll have to tear it from somewhere, and where would that be? THE BOOK? Nope nope nopity nope. I use bookmarks and I love bookmarks.

I used to remember the page numbers but in senior year of high school academics started turning my brain into mush and made me dependent on bookmarks.

Most of my bookmarks are from Amazon which I received along with books I ordered, but I do have a couple I made myself. There was this one bookmark that I received from an author as part of a giveaway which was only printed one side, so I used the other side to paint a background and wrote A Crown of Midnight in calligraphy. Guess what? While selling back a book to a second-hand bookstore, I LEFT THE BOOKMARK IN IT. I FORGOT ABOUT IT. And now someone else has it and I hope they’re using it well, or they left it in the book for more people to use. I just hope it hasn’t gotten destroyed or thrown somewhere 😦

Stop reading randomly or stop after a chapter/certain amount of pages

Neither but I guess I lean more towards randomly? If I have a choice of stopping and I’ve got nothing to do, I try to stop at a point where there’s no suspense—whether that’s in the middle or at the end of a chapter. But I’ve noticed that usually authors try to end chapters with small cliffhangers so I try not to wait till that and just stop wherever.

If I stop when something AMAZING is happening or there’s a cliffhanger/big reveal, I will think about it every second until I pick up the book again, and that is not productive.

Certain place at home for reading?

When at home, I usually read while sitting or lying on my bed but that’s because it’s the only proper place to sit in my room and I’m almost always in my room than the rest of the house.

But recently with college, I’ve been reading more during classes than at home because I’m either blogging or doing assignments at home—leaving hardly any time to read. While in the classes I’m anyway not paying attention in, I try to read discretely. *shrug* Gotta do what ya gotta do.

Eat or drink while reading?

Generally neither because it could go in two ways:

  1. I forget about the food/drink because I’m to engrossed in the book and my beverage became cold.
  2. I pay way more attention to what I’m eating than reading because the book is boring.

Either way, not effective.

But if I HAD to choose, I’d go with beverage. I’m really careful while drinking or eating with books nearby and more often than not, crumbles fall on the book and I HATE that. Easier to manage drinking and making sure the liquid doesn’t fall on the book.

Music or TV while reading?

Funny story*, a few years back I was reading the newspaper (back when I actually used to) and saw a picture of a girl reading with earphones in her ears. I was so confused about how she could pay attention to the book with music in her ears. I really get into music as well so if music was played, more often than not my attention would be split. I even wondered out loud to my mom and she basically didn’t care so she gave a mediocre “I don’t know” reply and went back to her work.

But several months after that incident, I put in earphones while reading a book and I found that with the right kind of music, you can block out other sounds and still read with concentration.

I listen to music while reading when there’s a lot of noise, but it’s not preferred. And a definite NO to TV**.

*Or not funny, whatever

**Not that I actually even watch TV. When I want to watch shows, I just binge them online. Only my dad watches TV regularly (for news) and mom switches it on everyday to let devotional songs play out loud in the morning/evenings.

One book at a time or several?

I used to be a strictly one book gal until recently, but for the last few weeks I’ve taken to reading more than one. Probably because one is an ebook, one a paperback and another a beta-read situation.

I usually stick to one book because when I start one, I’m too absorbed in it. I finish reading pretty fast and then move on to the next book. The only exceptions are when a book is REALLY boring that I’ll have to pause it and read something else. More often than not I end up DNFing that book I paused (which is what happened to King’s Cage, which I haven’t picked up ever again).

Reading at home or everywhere?

I have always been reading everywhere, whenever I can. This has especially been facilitated by the existence of ebooks and also last benches in class where I can read books with the people in front of me covering the book from the teacher #skills

But when I can, I try to carry a paperback around with me and read. When I had a membership in the local library, I used to read all day long and go every day to exchange and issue a new book. Can’t do that if I have a preference for home.

My only issue is not reading in moving vehicles because it gives me a headache. But this also means that nowadays when I spend two hours a day travelling back and forth from college, I can’t utilise those travel hours. I end up listening to my bus playlist and sleeping lol.

Reading out loud or silently?

Silently, always. I read faster when it’s in my head and I’m not reading out loud.

However, sometimes when I’m alone, I like to read out loud and jump into character even more. I day the dialogues to try to become the character and say the way they say it. (And there you have some embarrassing fact about me; I’m gonna regret putting this out to the world, aren’t I?)(meh)

Do you ever read ahead or skip pages?

Back when I first started REALLY getting into reading, my mom spoke about when she and her sister used to inhale books like they were air. She said that for almost every book she used to read the first chapter, last few pages/chapter and then read the book properly. So she already knows the ending,

My question to her was: what is the point of reading then???? WHAT ABOUT THE FEELS? Yeah she’s one of those “I’d like to remain sane thanks bye” types. Muggles.

So no, I don’t read ahead or skip pages. How much ever I want to skip pages, I don’t but I am guilty of skim reading which I do quite often when I’m bored with the book/part.

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

Obviously keeping it like new!! BUT, I do agree that it’s hard to not break the spine, especially since I mostly read paperbacks. I’m too engrossed in the book to care about spines. *shrug* I do become disappointed when I notice the broken spine later on, though.

Do you write in your books?

I don’t! I religiously don’t and I try not to have open pens around so there are no random scratches as well. If I do want to note down something, though, I use sticky notes. I’ve got quite a few of them and this is why I bought them*.

Sometimes I also stick tabs and write down in a notebook with the page number as reference to where the comment goes. But this is usually for reviews only.

*Not really but this is the best use, don’t you think?

Who do you tag?

I tag:

What are YOUR reading habits? Do you share any of them in common with me? Do you religiously use bookmarks as well? Do you listen to music or watch TV while reading? What are other reading habits that you think matter (to us anyway)?

The Perfectly Imperfect tag

First off, I suck at doing tags. Or rather, remembering to do tags.

I’m pretty sure there are still some floating around the universe with my name on them begging to be fulfilled but I never will because I FORGOT.

I’ve devised a new strategy of screenshotting the tags I’ve got to do and leaving them be in my gallery until I’m in the mood to do a tag. BUT it’s an efficient strategy! I can look back and find them! They’ll forever be in my gallery until done!

Moving on!

I was tagged to do this by Ana Regina* (who is SO LOVELY GO VISIT HER BLOG Y’ALL) about a month back. AND I’M DOING IT SO SOON OMG I’M A NEW PERSON.**

This tag was created by Aqsa and I googled and found her blog (thank you Google for everything in life). I didn’t know her previously but her blog seems really nice so GO GIVE SOME LOVE. Obviously she’s a really good person because she CAME UP with this wonderful tag?!

*Fun fact: I’ve received the most comments from her on this blog. YAS GIRL.

**What are my goals in life, again?

  1. Copy/paste the image of the tag in your post. Done yo.
  2. Make sure to share a little blurb about the creator of the tag. Done yo.
  3. Give a shout out to the person who nominated you. Done yo.
  4. Lastly nominate as many bloggers as you would like (ranging from 1 to whichever amount you choose) and let them know that you nominated them. Cools.

The topics to talk on was mentioned in the rules as well but I decided to mention them while talking about them instead.

Talk about what your strengths are, and what you love about yourself. These can range from anything positive about you, or your future aspirations and goals.

I’ve been thinking about this for the last few minutes and I DON’T KNOW HELP.

I guess my strength is my sense of responsibility? And I want to consider how I talk. I talk and explain well, so there’s that.

I love my hair. Oh wait we’re not talking about something physical, are we? I’m only in the first topic why is this so hard.  I love that I’ve made really good friends in school and have the awesomest* best friends ever. I’m not very proud of the fact that I find it hard to make friends, but the ones I’m close to are really lovely and there’s no drama so it works out well. I’m talking about friends because until my teens I was a loner and making friends was really hard for me, so I love that I’ve got great ones.

*shh this is a word.

Who/what are you inspired by, and how do you want to make a difference?

I’m inspired by people who are kind, helpful and just supportive. I love supportive people because it means so much when another person has faith in you and provides motivation by just being there. I take inspiration and who I want to be on a more personal level than in a career or goal-oriented way, because I’m all about making a difference to people.

Being someone who is introvert as heck, I’m not going to go out and try to make a difference in multiple lives at once hands-on. But if I could just help people around me in small ways, even if it’s simply listening to them, I’m all for it.

What’s your advice to those that struggle to love themselves, and to those that doubt themselves?

Everyone struggles with loving and believing in themselves. People have issues about how they look, talk, work and so much more. You’re probably not going get rid of those thoughts ever. The trick is to work through them.

You should love yourself because you’re awesome as heck and you’re going to fulfill those dreams you have despite anything that someone (or your own mind) says. I think the first step to loving yourself is accepting yourself. And you DO. Why shouldn’t you?

And as for doubting yourself? You might not get rid of those doubts either. But you know what? Doubts are there for one of two outcomes: to change your decision to something better, or to show that you CAN despite any doubts or worries, because it’s what you want to do. There’s no going wrong with either of these two.*

*I think this has to be the most I’ve written about positivity and motivation in a REALLY long time

I tag:

The lovely Elm @ JustElm because I KNOW that she will dive in with so much positivity for the last topic and I just want her to answer it.

Just a Bank Space @ A Blog Filled With Thoughts I really want her to answer this tag as well

Ilsa @ A Whisper of Ink I know you’re a book blogger and probably don’t do lifestyle tags but I’m tagging you okay? okay.

If you want to do this tag as well, go ahead! Wait for no one to tag you, because where’s the fun in that?*

*Most of the tags I’ve done, I wasn’t tagged for anyway. I just do them because I want to and SO SHOULD YOU.

What are some strengths of yours than you are proud of? What do you love about yourself? Basically, why don’t you answer to these topics in the comments because I WANT TO KNOW what’s up.

The Book Blogger Insider tag

Hello. It’s me. I’m drowning in pending book reviews. But here’s a tag for you to see.

Do you know the problem with reading books very fast? And being a book blogger? You want to review most of them, but you can’t post so many reviews a day? And I don’t want to bore y’all with consecutive book reviews only?? Also there’s so much more I want to post about, since my blog isn’t only about books???

(Move on already)

I saw this tag over at Howling Libraries and it looked nice so I decided I’ll do it. She didn’t tag me, but who cares, really? 😛

  • Answer the questions below.
  • Credit the creator; Jamie at A Little Slice of Jamie.
  • Tag at least five people.
  • Have fun!

Where do you typically write your blog posts?

In front of the computer, usually. I prefer blogging on the desktop nowadays as I can do the graphics as well at the same time.

Otherwise, if I want to be more comfortable and have to only type, I blog on my phone. I don’t do this a lot, but when I want to blog, but I’m just not feeling it in that room, I blog on my phone. I make the graphics on another day, if required. I hate blogging on the WordPress app, so I usually just do it in the browser, as I am now.

How long does it generally take you to write a book review?

Typing up the review? Half an hour to an hour, depending on whether I’m multi-tasking or not.

I usually take a few days to a few weeks to type up the review after I read the book, as I’m busy or whatever. So when I sit down to type, I go back and try to remember everything and then give a proper review. Therefore, it takes a while.

(I am currently 11 book reviews behind. #help)

When did you start your book blog?

(Not technically only a book blog. I don’t stick to a niche.)

I started on January 16th, 2016. It’s been a year and a half and I still love blogging ❤ It was meant to be only for reviews but I digress.

What is the worst thing about having a book blog in your opinion?

I want to review everything. Well, almost everything.

As I read quite fast, and I love to read a lot, I pick up books immediately after finishing the previous one. And whether I like the book or not, I’ll usually want to review them and I simply don’t have the time to review all of them.

And speaking personally, I know that only reading reviews is boring. I like to change up between posts and talk about different things. This also means that I can’t post all the reviews soon after I read them, and I schedule them for a later (and sometimes WAY later) date.

There’s also the constant comparison between other blogs and mine. I LOVE reading blog posts and reviews where the writing is comical, jovial and fun to read. How much ever I try, I tend to be more formal and serious in my reviews, no matter how much I wish my writing was fun. So yeah, confidence levels are always bobbing up and down.

(Wait, was I supposed to say only one thing? Meh, it’s okay.)

What is the best thing about having a book blog in your opinion?

I can talk about books all I want. I can vent, rant, rave, whatever—how much ever I want to. Granted, I don’t do it much since I usually rant WHILE READING to my best friends, but I can.

I also love the book blogging community, which kinda comes like a bonus. True, there are issues and debates popping up all the time. But I love that there’s a whole COMMUNITY of people wanting to talk about books. ❤

(Again, didn’t stick to one point, did I?)

What blog post have you had the most fun writing so far?

I do have some that I had a lot of fun writing.. but I can’t choose ONE. Plus, some of them won’t fit the book blogging category so.. let’s move on to the next question 😛

What is your favorite type of blog post to write?

Other than the reviews where I rant/rave to my heart’s content? Discussion posts.

If we’re talking about book-blogging categories, I think my favourites are the Top Ten Tuesday memes. TTT is the first meme I’ve ever done (and doing) and it includes 2 things I really love:

  • Books and
  • Lists

When do you typically write?

During the semester, mostly on Sunday mornings. I jot down ideas and notes throughout the week on blog posts and type them up on blogging-sprees on Sundays. I schedule them for the next open dates.

Otherwise, just when I’ve got a few hours consecutively since I like doing more than one post per sitting. This also includes the graphics and updating my review index and such.

Do you review every book you read?

If I did, I’d either have to publish a review a day (at least), or I’ll have scheduled reviews months in advance. Not trying to brag, but I’m quite close to achieving my Goodreads reading challenge 2017 which I set to 150 books.

No, I don’t review all the books I read, but I wish I could.

How do you write your book reviews? With a cup of coffee or tea? With Netflix? Cuddled with your fur baby?

On those Sunday mornings, I blog right after breakfast so nothing to eat. But if I’ve been blogging for well over an hour, I get a drink for myself.

I usually blog with music in the background. Only sometimes does the music distract me, so it’s fine.

How often do you post?

Once in two or three days. I used to blog everyday before college began, but I quickly adapted (and loved) the scheduling ahead system. This way, if a certain week is very hectic for me, I don’t have to worry as I’ve scheduled for it in advance.

And I tag everyone because all of you are special little unicorns who deserve to be tagged.

What’s your blogging life like? Do you relate with any of my answers? Let me know your answers to all of them below, or do the tag and link me up to  it! 🙂

The identity tag

Hey everyone!

At the moment, my second semester is going on, my college fest will be held in the next few days, there’s also another event taking place… my life is kinda hectic. I was thinking about what to blog next when I remembered that the wonderful Elm had nominated me for the identity tag.

This tag is basically answering some questions, so here we go.

1. If they made a song about your life, what genre would it be?

Uhm.. why is the first question itself so hard? Pop, I guess? Although it could be Dance too.

2. What is your sole purpose in life?

To be happy and spread love. Honestly, I’ve never thought about this, because I’m a person who lives in the NOW and goes with the flow, taking up new hobbies and opportunities. I don’t have any specific purpose. I just want to be happy and make others happy.

3. What do you regret doing?

Again, as I said, I live in the present so if there was something that I wish I didn’t do, I would have let go of it pretty soon. Right now my mind is blank. I think I have more of “what I regret not doing” than doing.

4. What are your strengths?

I’m a good listener. I’m also a good friend. And I’m pretty influential. My best friend Hem has been affected by my vocabulary, many friends have started reading after listening to me and a couple started blogs after knowing about mine. Hem also started a bullet journal inspired by me; oh and she’s now obsessed with drawing mandalas because of yours truly.

5. What are your weaknesses?

I don’t realize when and how much I’m important to someone. I be a good friend and listen and part easily as acquaintances with new people but they feel more of a connection to me. Later I, inadvertently, hurt them. I guess they feel close to me because it’s easy to open up to me and because I actually listen and support. Many times, because of this, in friendships I only listen. The other person doesn’t let me speak and this makes me feel caged because I listen to them for hours and they don’t give a five minute break for me to speak.

6. What’s one thing that not many people know about you?

That I’ve been through depression. As for my girl squad, they met me and we became a group when I was in depression. They might have noticed but we’ve never spoken about it—they’re those friends who silently understand and support and don’t bring up topics which they think you wont be comfortable with. When I want to tell someone, I’m not able to bring it into conversation.

7. What has been the best decision of your life?

Deciding to say eff it to depression and becoming happy. It has leaded to so much—good friendships, this blog, trying new things etc.

8. What are you afraid of and why?

I’m afraid of daring to take risks like deviating from rules and rebelling like all other teenagers do. Go somewhere without letting parents know or going and lying/not telling is not something I can do. Even if I make up my mind to lie about what I’m doing, in front of my parents the truth comes out. I guess my parents realize this as well and that’s why they’re pretty chill with me.

9. Where are you going in life?

I don’t know. And you know what? I’m fine with that. Life will take where it takes me. I’m satisfied with living in the present and not looking at the future too much.

I nominate you

Basically anyone and everyone. If you want to do this, go ahead! It’s nice to reflect on yourself, actually. I liked this tag.

Hope you have a good day!
